Having just returned from a 6-week trip to Seattle via the Alaska and Cassiar Highways, we can report that most roads were in good shape, except for the north end of the Cassiar which has a less than ideal roadbed and suffers from soft spots and broken pavement in areas. And there are no Tim Horton’s donut shops on the Cassiar Highway.
All of the road was easily passable, though slower speeds were required in some areas. On the return trip, we found BC Highway crews working diligently to improve the roughest spots.
Gas prices are a bit of a shocker–we saw $1.57 per liter in the more remote areas along the Cassiar Highway. After converting liters to gallons and adjusting for the weaker U.S. Dollar, this works out to $5.86 per gallon. Since then, prices have continued to climb slightly.
Alaska and the Yukon are having a cooler summer than usual, and in parts of the interior the Fireweed hasn’t even started to bloom. So much for global warming.
On a brighter note, Haines is as spectacular as ever and we’re glad to be home. Look for more activity on this blog starting today!
